Just an hour from London by train, this 6.7-mile walk will take you through so many beautiful
habitats and will make you reconsider what you think you know about Essex. Wivenhoe is a small fishing town nestled on the banks of the Colne estuary and indeed much of the walk will take you along this beautiful stretch of river and salt marsh. A section of the walk will take you through Cockaynes Wood, ancient woodland listed in the Domesday Book and down to Alresford Creek stopping off to admire the 12th Century ruin of St Peter’s Church before walking back to Wivenhoe woods along the river where you can spot all manner of wading birds.
For those who want to make a day of it, and who are not too tired, they can end the walk with a visit to one of the cafes, pubs or restaurants, or one of the many art galleries or boutique shops before hopping on a train back home!
